Gwinnett County, GA (February 24, 2023) - A Gwinnett County police officer is in the hospital recovering from injuries that were sustained in a car accident involving a suspected drunk driver that occurred on Thursday night.
According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, the officer was responding to a five-car accident on Interstate-85 near Pleasant Hill Road.
Investigators reported that the officer was in her patrol vehicle when a vehicle driven by a 35-year-old man from Suwannee collided with the back of her vehicle.
Official photos show the patrol car's truck smashed in and the entire rear of the car severely damaged.
The officer was rushed to a nearby hospital by medics. According to officials, she suffered a head injury but is expected to recover.
At the scene, police apprehended the man who hit her. He's been charged with DUI, following too closely, having an open alcohol container, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, driving without a valid license, and failing to register his vehicle in Georgia.
Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a serious crime in Georgia, and those found guilty of this offense face a number of consequences.
For example, first-time offenders could face a sentence ranging from 24 hours to a year in prison. Fines are imposed ranging from $300 to $1,000. Furthermore, your license may be suspended for up to a year. The penalties for a DUI conviction get worse.
Drivers can undoubtedly be stopped, charged with DUI, and convicted without causing any harm. Driving while intoxicated impairs your ability to drive; your judgment is skewed, your vision deteriorates, your reaction time slows, and you frequently act carelessly.
Drunk driving accidents can occur as a result of such carelessness. When this happens, the driver may be held legally liable for any injuries or damages that they cause.
Every driver is responsible for driving safely. Any drunk driver who gets behind the wheel of a vehicle has violated this responsibility and duty.
