Hit-and-run Accidents in Georgia
While any car accident can be dangerous, hit-and-run accidents are particularly harmful. A hit-and-run occurs when one of the drivers involved flees the scene before the police can arrive to file an incident report. This is considered illegal in Georgia.
When there is a car accident, everyone involved is supposed to stop, check if anyone was injured, and immediately call 911. A hit and run derails this entire process, not to mention it can cost someone their life.
The law affords you the same legal protections regardless of whether or not the driver fled the scene. The most sensible action would be to remain where you are and wait for the police to arrive at the scene of the collision. Get the license plate number of the vehicle that impacted you if at all feasible.
When the hit and run is reported to the police, they will begin looking for the vehicle that struck you and fled the scene. Damaged vehicles typically don’t travel very far and can be easy to spot, so the sooner you contact the police, the sooner they can begin to look for the hit-and-run driver.
If you are the victim of a hit-and-run accident, do not hesitate to contact a professional Personal Injury Attorney for legal advice. You’ll need all the help you can get if the at-fault driver flees the accident scene before you can get any information from them. You will want the help of an experienced lawyer to make sure all of your losses are covered.
Regardless of whether or not the at-fault driver is ever found, make sure you speak with a lawyer before trying to proceed with filing your claim.
